A GROUP of talented dancers from Worcester are set to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

Academy Theatre Arts, a Worcester-based performing arts school, has been selected to perform at Dance Proms 2016 on October 30, the biggest national youth dance celebration in the UK.

The 11 girls, all aged between 12 and 16, will perform a Classical Greek dance called Paradisi Gloria, from Stabat Mater by Karl Jenkins.

Dance groups from around the world and the UK submitted a video of an original dance for the chance to secure a place in the running order of just 22 dances.

Helen Leek, principal, Academy Theatre Arts, said: “This is our first time at Dance Proms, so we are thrilled and honoured to have been selected and are very excited to be taking to the stage at the Royal Albert Hall.

“We have chosen a Classical Greek dance for our performance, a style steeped in vast history, which provides a wonderful arena for the freedom and joy of dance reflected in our piece.”

The students will be joined on the iconic stage by 21 other young groups from as far afield as Vietnam and Italy, performing in a range of other genres such as Latin American, Hip Hop and Lyrical dance.

Matt Flint, celebrity patron of Dance Proms, said: “Academy Theatre Arts has an incredible track record of success, with many of its students going on to perform on the national and international stage.

“Ex-pupil Katie Love was a finalist alongside myself on the BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance? so I’ve seen what this fantastic group is capable of and I can’t wait to watch them perform at their first ever Dance Proms.”
