Rugby star continues to support hospice

ONE OF Worcester’s much-loved rugby players has pledged to continue to show his support for a children’s charity close to his heart.

Sam Betty was announced as Worcester Warriors official player-ambassador for Acorns Children’s Hospice for a second year.

As part of the role, the flanker will make regular visits throughout 2015 and 2016 to the charity, based on Bath Road, to meet the children, their families, and staff.

He will take part in various activities alongside his teammates to show their continued backing of the hospice and the work they do to care for children with life limiting and life threatening illnesses and their loved ones.

“This is a cause very close to my heart, so as we get ready for the new season, it’s an honour to be able to support the charity and its work. I will do my best to continue to raise awareness of the vital care the charity provides, both at the hospice and out in the community.”

Acorns relies completely on the donations and sponsorships it receives to cover the £9million it costs every year to provide the palliative care they offer.

“With this being Acorns for the Three Counties’ 10th anniversary year, it’s an honour to be able to fulfil the role once again. We have lots planned and we are again looking forward to Warriors annual Charity Match-day in the New Year,” he added.

In the last year the charity has helped 180 children and more 230 families including those who have lost a loved one.

Charlotte Anson, corporate fund-raising officer at Acorns, said: “We are thrilled that Sam will be supporting us in the role as official player-ambassador this year.

“Sam demonstrates great enthusiasm and a real understanding of our work and we would like to say a huge thank you for all he has done to-date. We very much look forward to working with Sam and everyone at Sixways in the new season”
