Relay sees charity lap up £30k

A CHEQUE for more than £30,000 has been handed over to Cancer Research UK on the back of the city’s Relay for Life.

The overnight charity event took place at RGS Grange School in September and saw hundreds of men, women and children walk round the track in a bid to collect money to fight against the disease.

And last Monday (November 10) committee members and teams from the 24-hour fund-raiser attended the Alma Tavern on Droitwich Road to give a cheque worth £30,549.53 over to Paul Titley and Liz Shiels, representatives of the national charity.

During the evening all the teams were also presented with individual certificates to mark their efforts in raking in the cash towards the cause.

Lezley Moran, volunteer chairman of Relay for Life Worcester, said: “We are so proud of all involved to hand over this cheque.

“Cancer Research UK does not receive any government funding for its research, so every step the charity makes towards beating cancer relies on every hour, every pound and every person.

“People shouldn’t worry if they haven’t fund-raised before. This is a unique event and every single person in Worcester can play a part.”

Dates for next year’s event have now also been set and it will once more take place at RGS Grange School on Saturday, September 12, and Sunday, September 13. The theme for the 2015 relay is a family festival with a ‘Royal’ twist.

More information about the event can be found by emailing [email protected] or by visiting cruk.org/relay online.
