ECO-CONSCIOUS residents recycled more than 72,000 tonnes of waste last year.
Figures released by Worcestershire County Council show 72,500 tonnes was processed by Envirosort in 2014, the state-of-the-art sorting centre based in Norton on the outskirts of Worcester.
Bosses have said it shows a clear commitment from homeowners across the county and neighbouring Herefordshire as it is a four per cent increase on 2013.
All of the recycling from both counties heads to the EnviroSort building where it is sorted before eventually being given a new lease of life helping to make things like cars, aeroplanes, newspapers and even new roads.
Coun Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for environment, said: “The recycling figures are very encouraging and people in Worcester have definitely played their part in making sure they continue to send their waste to be sorted and sent for recycling.
“Residents deserve to be praised for their efforts which are also helping the environment by reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites.”
EnviroSort, which opened in 2010, is managed by Severn Waste Services on behalf of Worcestershire County Council and Herefordshire Council.
It covers 5.8 acres and has more than a mile of conveyor belts, 145 electric motors and 12 miles of cable.
Coun Andy Roberts, Worcester City Council cabinet member for a cleaner and greener city, added: “Worcester people are very keen on recycling, so it’s great to see that so much of household waste is now being recycled.
“But even if you recycle a lot, there might still be some items you’re putting in your black bins that could actually go in the green ones.
