Promising a whole busload of trees

CARING staff from First Worcester buses rolled up their sleeves to begin a two year project to plant more trees in the city.

First Worcester buses are donating more than 230 trees over the next two years, as a contribution to Mayor of Worcester Coun Roger Knight’s pledge to plant 2,000 new trees in the city.

One of the firm’s new environmentally-friendlier Euro 6 buses, which runs on the Worcester to Malvern 44 route was also on show at Cripplegate Park.

An oak tree and two ornamental varieties: the Foxglove tree (Paulownia tomentosa) which has trumpet-shaped, violet-blue flowers and the Maidenhair tree (Ginkgo biloba) – the sole survivor of an ancient group of trees that dates back to beyond the time of the dinosaurs, were planted on the day.

Nigel Eggleton, Managing Director for First Worcester said: “As part of our commitment to improving bus provision in and around the city of Worcester, we are also committed to the environmental impact and making our green spaces more attractive and enjoyable for residents and visitors to the city.”

The remainder of varieties donated by First Worcester are oak, birch, golden Larch, Japanese maple, Indian Bean, elm, rowan, apple and pear trees.

These will be planted along the riverside and in Cripplegate, Battenhall, Fort Royal and Gheluvelt Parks.

Coun Knight said he was delighted with First Worcester’s support and said: “The foxglove tree is one of my favorites, so I’m particularly pleased that it will now be planted in Cripplegate Park.”
