Police blast pub for longer hours bid

AN APPLICATION to extend a Barbourne pub’s trading hours has been slammed by police after they said the site is not being operated responsibly.

Bosses at the Cap ‘n’ Gown have submitted plans to lengthen their sale of alcohol to either 1am or 2am, depending on the day of the week, with a decision expected to be made at Worcester City Council’s Licensing Sub Committee meeting next Monday (January 26).

The Upper Tything pub currently opens between 11am and 11pm but new proposals would see it open its doors from 10am until 1am on Mondays to Thursdays and from 10am to 2am on Friday to Sunday.

And despite no complaints from Hereford and Worcester Fire Authority, Child Protection, Planning Authority, Trading Standards and Worcestershire Health Trust, officers highlighted recent reported incidents at the venue as a reason to go against the plans.

A official letter of objection written to the city council said: “We are concerned about recent reported incidents at the premises.

“The recent incidents provide good evidence that the premises is not being operated responsibly by the DPS, Mr Marshall.

“It would appear that he has been supplying alcohol to customers after midnight and allowing smoking on the premises. In other words, having ‘after hours lock-ins’ at the premises.

“This behaviour has resulted in disorder at the premises. This breaches the current licensing conditions and undermines the licensing objective ‘prevent crime and disorder’.”

Environmental Health have also lodged a representation to vary the application on the grounds of public nuisance and public safety.

The Hook Norton Brewery Co Ltd, which runs the pub, were unable to issue a comment before The Observer went to press.
