Plight of pony Keith sees the cash roll in

THE PLIGHT of a loveable pony left abandoned by the roadside near Sixways has seen almost £1,000 raised towards his treatment.

Caring city residents have rallied to the cause of Keith, the brave piebald pony who was rescued from roadside with horrific leg injuries.

The Observer reported last week (April 22) on the efforts of rescuers to traces those who abandoned him and fund the urgent treatment he needed.

Keith was found tied to a fence on Pershore Road on April 8 and had been left with no food or water, the tether around his neck was dangerously tight and a severe wound on his hind right leg had been left to fester for about two weeks.

But now, three weeks in to his treatment, an appeal to raise funds to help pay for his care and rehabilitation has already raised almost £1,000.

RSPCA chief inspector Lee Hopgood said: “We are so grateful to all those people who have donated money towards Keith’s care and also shown him such support already.

“Keith is a brave lad and is so lovable despite his horrific injury. He is such a sweet and gentle soul he is the talk of the yard. He has won over everyone that has met him and we all just want him to go from strength to strength in his recovery.

“We still have not been able to trace an owner and we do not know how he got the wound on his leg but it is serious.

“He still has some way to go before he is out of the woods with it – but he is doing very well and we are so proud of him already,” he added.

The RSPCA and other horse welfare charities are struggling to cope with the amount of abused and neglected horses and have described themselves as being in the grip of a horse crisis.

The RSPCA currently has 600 horses in its care and receives about 500 complaints relating to horse welfare every week.
