Phase one of Cathedral Square revamp sees new road layout

THE FIRST phase of the Cathedral Square revamp has been completed with the opening of a revised road layout.

Developer Salmon Harvester and their contractor, Speller Metcalfe now will press ahead with the construction of the retail and leisure elements of the multi-million pound scheme.

The new central turning area in front of the cathedral is fully open, following final safety checks this week.

Traffic travelling towards the river along College Street can now turn to access the NCP car park and Friar Street.

A similar turning point has been provided for traffic travelling towards Sidbury from Deansway.

Other features include an improved pedestrian crossing facility which allows easy access between the High Street and the Cathedral and an improved bus offering which include a longer bus bay that can cater for two buses with a new larger bus shelter for bus users.

This is in addition to new flagpoles which are flying the county flag of Worcestershire, the St George flag and the Union Jack in the central island.

New improved lighting has also been installed sympathetically to reflect the environment around the cathedral.

The red and white temporary barriers currently in place at the NCP access will remain in situ to help construction vehicles access the development site whilst maintaining some separation for pedestrians.

Coun Simon Geraghty, cabinet member for Economy, Skills and Infrastructure at the County Council, and Leader of Worcester City Council said: “I am delighted that this first phase of the scheme has been completed on time and to budget, and with minimal disruption for such a high-profile city centre scheme.

“I now look forward to the development of the retail and leisure element of the overall project over the next year or so, before we return to finalise the new pedestrian square.

In preparation for the next phase of development a temporary footway has been constructed at the back of the bus bay for pedestrians to link College Street to the High Street.

A hoarding has been erected to protect the development site and this is currently illustrated with some historical remembrance and seasonal information.

As the project progresses the hoarding will be regularly updated with plans and drawings showing the final scheme.
