Musical hits right notes for charity

TALENTED youngsters from a Worcester theatrical school have raised £900 for a city charity from their sell-out musical at the Swan Theatre.

Cast members of Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section’s (WODYS) recent summer production of Les Misérables raised the funds through interval raffles for Worcestershire Young Carers, who support more than 320 children with mental or physical health problems.

The cheque was handed to Angela Parton, operations director with responsibility for young carers and Vicky Parker, participation worker, on the final night of the production, which saw 66 cast members complete six performances of the much-loved musical.

David Humphries, WODYS founder, chairman and producer said: “We all had a fantastic week performing Les Misérable at the Swan Theatre. Our audiences were wonderful and I’ve received many comments of praise about the production.

“I’m equally thrilled we’ve been able to raise £900 to such a worthwhile cause as a result of our audiences buying raffle tickets.”

Neil Phillips, a senior worker with Worcestershire Young Carers, said: “We’ve worked really closely with the guys from WODYS in the months building up to their show and have been really impressed with how supportive and helpful they’ve been.

“They’ve visited our youth clubs for young carers and really taken the time to understand the people we work with. We’re over the moon they’ve raised £900 to support young carers in Worcestershire.

“It’s an incredible amount of money and will help to make a huge difference to the lives of some really deserving young people.”
