Mayor sings praises of city’s unsung heroes

SOME of the city’s unsung heroes have been honoured by the Mayor of Worcester.

Coun Alan Amos hosted the ‘Best of Worcester’ Community Awards Ceremony on Friday, March 20, to celebrate everything that is good about the Faithful City.

More than 170 nominations were received but the Mayor and his team had the select just a few to pick up a prestigious honour at the event which was supported by the Rotary Club of Worcester.

The Mayor’s own personal commendation went to Hollymount Primary School, in recognition of the dedication and commitment from the teaching and non-teaching staff and the achievement of the pupils for working so hard – often when facing difficult circumstances – to achieve success.

All the proceeds of the event went to local charities – including the Mayor’s Come On In Project to tackle the problem of loneliness amongst older people; Forces Support, which provides practical help to families following the loss of a soldier in action; and the Cathedral Charitable Trust to help the poor and needy

“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who made a nomination or was nominated,” says Cllr Alan Amos, Mayor of Worcester,” Coun Amos said.

“There are only winners in this situation – no losers – and I hope this starts the tradition of recognising and rewarding Worcester people for all the work they choose to do for others, without ever expecting or seeking anything for themselves.”

Winners include:

– Nine-year-old Ben Chadwick, who swam 50 km to raise funds for the hospital team who saved his life as a baby

(The individual or organisation which has done the most to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Worcester)

– Worcester Snoezelen, an independent charity specifically set up to offer multi-sensory and creative activities for people who have a diverse range of needs

(The individual or organisation which has offered the most imaginative training and support to help local people back to work)

– Lyppard Hub, a charitable organisation which has been at the heart of the community since 1993

(The individual or organisation which has done the most to boost community spirit and goodwill within their neighbourhood)

– Clancy Radley and Jacob Watton of Deaf Direct, for helping hundreds of young people who suffer from a hearing disability

(The school, youth centre or youth group which has done the most to involve their local community)

– Two Pennies Money Advice, which provides free advice to local people with money problems

(A business or enterprise with a social agenda that has benefited the people of Worcester)

– Sue Wright, Dilys Round and Barbara Good of St. Clements Church, for running a Saturday afternoon tea party for elderly and lonely people

(A community based team or organisation that has gone the extra mile to help local people)
