A TOLLADINE man who stole £120 from a city laundrette has been ordered to pay back almost ten times that amount.

Scott Marston, of Lilac Avenue, broke into the site on September 25 and stole the cash, but caused £1,525 worth of damage to the machinery while doing so.

Last Friday (October 17) Worcester Magistrates Court heard the 40-year-old was struggling to survive on the benefits he was receiving so stole the money for him and his child to live.

The court was also told the new equipment needed for the laundrette were specialist parts and would have to be shipped from Sweden.

Defending solicitor Chris Aggrey said: “While battling to get his child back he had to declare a change of circumstance and this changed his benefits meaning he was short of cash.

“Then – not the right thing to do – but he broke into these machines. He is very remorseful.”

Marston was ordered to pay £1,000 compensation and given a 12-month conditional discharge.

District Judge Nigel Cadbury said: “This is one of those situations where people just do not think of the consequences of what they have done.

“I imagine you had no idea you were causing so much damage and such a loss to that company.”

He was also ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge.
