Kempsey car sales company sold 'clocked' vehicles

THE DIRECTOR of a car sales business has been ordered to pay almost £11,500 after being found guilty of selling vehicles with reduced mileage.

Loyd Chandler, from Kempsey based Priority Hire Ltd, appeared at Worcester Crown Court last Monday (February 16) after an investigation by Trading Standards officers found the company had advertised two ‘clocked’ cars for sale.

One had been sold to a customer before officers from Worcestershire Regulatory Services swooped.

The court heard Chandler, who had earlier pleaded guilty to offences under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, had employed someone to deal with buying and selling the vehicles and it was that person who was responsible for the altered mileage.

The defence said the employee had been dismissed and Chandler had no knowledge of the offences, but further evidence showed Chandler’s eBay account had been used to advertise the cars.

The judge said consumer protection was designed to ensure no company or individual could be allowed to scam the public.

He added Chandler was the sole director and had therefore allowed the criminal activity to take place.

Chandler was disqualified from being a director for five years and told to pay fines and costs totalling £11,408.

Coun Mark Bullivant, WRS joint committee chairman, said: “The work of our Trading Standards officers is key to ensuring our consumers are protected from unscrupulous acts by businesses wanting to make a quick buck.

“They act in the interest of our public to stop them becoming victim to rogue traders operating across Worcestershire..

“Our officers actively investigate complaints where fraudulent activity is alleged, and carry out regular inspections both online and in person at local car dealers.

“Our small band of officers will continue to strive to protect innocent consumers who are defrauded in this way and I am proud of the work they do to protect our communities.

“The fine handed down by the Judge in this case shows how seriously the court views such matters.”
