History comes to life at The Commandery

Worcester Editorial 25th Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

HISTORY enthusiasts will have the chance to look back 365 years ago to the Battle of Worcester where they can experience what life was like during that time.

Held at The Commandery during the bank holiday weekend, visitors will see the Great Hall and grounds brimming with living history demonstrations, musket firing displays, historic children’s games and dressing up opportunities.

The ‘Notorious Nine’, civilian characters brought to life from the era, will tell their captivating stories to visitors and teach them some of the skills they needed to survive during the period.

Amongst the fascinating characters, visitors can expect to meet an undercover Parliamentarian spy, a scary surgeon and members of the Wylde family, who once lived at The Commandery when it became the Royalist army headquarters for the final battle of the English Civil War.

Charlie Fothergill, Commandery marketing officer, said: “The Commandery played a vital role during the most tumultuous period in Worcester’s history. We want to take visitors on an exciting journey back in time this Bank Holiday weekend, with activities and demonstrations that will appeal to all the family.”

The event takes place on Bank Holiday weekend (August 27 to August 29) and will be open 10am to 5pm on Saturday and Monday, 1.30pm to 5pm on Sunday.

For Civil War history enthusiasts, there will be a talk on Thursday, September 1 at 7pm about Captain James Hind – The Royalist Highwayman, run in partnership with the Battle of Worcester Society.

Entry to The Commandery and the special event is free to all Commandery card holders, and Worcester City residents if they produce a Worcester City Council tax bill. Otherwise entry is £5.50 for adults, £2.50 for children. A family ticket costs £13.
