THE LIGHTS are set to be turned off at The Guildhall next month to mark a hundred years since the outbreak of the First World War.
Worcester City Council will join the national LIGHTS OUT campaign on Monday, August 1, but plunging the historic building into darkness between 10pm and 11pm as well as its offices in Farrier Street and depot at Sixways.
Homeowners and organisations all over the UK are being asked to participate in a move which mirrors the famous remark made by Sir Edward Grey, the British Foreign Secretary in 1914, when he said: “The lamps are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime.”
Duncan Sharkey, managing director of Worcester City Council, said it was important never to forget the sacrifices people made during the Great War.
“We will be switching out lights at our offices as a mark of respect to the millions of people who lost their lives and who suffered during the First World War,” he said.
“The lessons learned from these events one hundred years ago must never be forgotten.
“I would encourage Worcester residents to join in between 10pm and 11pm and switch their lights out too, so as a city we can experience a shared moment of reflection.”
