Grant handed to aid cancer treatment

A KIND-HEARTED volunteer group has awarded £30,000 to the NHS for a surgical robot to aid in the treatment of Worcester patients living with prostate cancer.

The Worcestershire Ambassadors (WA) have recently awarded the money to Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which is aiming to raise £1.6million as part of the ‘Rory the Robot Appeal’.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals Charity is fund-raising for the state-of-the-art surgical robotic system, which will allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, meaning they can operate through a few small incisions rather than large open surgery.

The donation was generated through a number of fund-raising efforts held by the WA, including the successful Ambassadors’ Ball in October.

Vince Hopkins, Chairman of the WA said: “We’re delighted to be able to help with this charitable cause.

“We chose to support the appeal because of the huge difference Rory will make to patients with prostate cancer in the county.”

Adel Makar, lead cancer clinician at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said: “We’re very grateful to the WA for their contribution to the Rory the Robot Appeal.

“Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK. The more people we can get behind our appeal, the sooner we can start transforming treatment for our patients.”
