Going the distance to honour brave cousin

A KIND-HEARTED fund-raiser has completed a gruelling 200 mile trek in honour of her ‘brave and ambitious’ cousin.

Claire Hincks walked coast to coast from Cumbria to Yorkshire to raise an impressive £1,500 for Acorns Children’s Hospice and Brain Tumour Support.

The 26-year-old chose Acorns for the Three Counties, on Bath Road, to donate to after they cared for her cousin, Francis, who died at just ten-years-old from a brain tumour. She completed the cross country journey as a tribute to her.

She said: “I was inspired by one of the bravest, most determined, and ambitious young women I have ever known and wanted to give something back to the charities who gave my cousin so much support.

“Frances came to Acorns hospice in Worcester during her final days, allowing her family to say goodbye under the care and support of an understanding network of nurses. I am told their cups of tea were magical, and their support was every bit needed alongside our goodbyes as Frances’ life, struggle and death profoundly impacted all of us in ways we couldn’t have imagined.”

It costs the charity £9million every year to run their three hospices and they rely totally on donations such as this to continue to offer the specialist palliative care they offer to children suffering with life limiting and life threatening illnesses.

Mandie Fitzgerald, community fund-raising manager at Acorns, said: “Congratulations to Claire for completing such an ambitious challenge. The money raised will make a huge impact on the lives of children just like Frances and we are extremely grateful that she chose to donate to Acorns. ”

Brain Tumour Support also run completely off of donations to offer help to patients and their families who have been impacted with the diagnosis of a brain tumour.

Helen Silverthorn, fund-raising team leader at Brain Tumour Support, said: “Claire’s fund-raising is wonderful and will help us to provide further support to families affected by a brain tumour.

“Frances and her family touched our hearts and it is for her and others like her that Brain Tumour Support is determined to provide continuing support to families who face this devastating illness.

“This charity is all about the family and for Claire to have raised this money in memory of her cousin means such a lot to us.”
