THE MAYOR of Worcester has raised the Armed Forces Day flag over the Guildhall to show support for the men and women who make up the city’s military.

Coun Roger Knight was joined by fellow councillors, military personnel and MP Robin Walker to observe the raising of the flag on Monday (June 22), as part of the early celebrations leading up to Armed Forces Day this Saturday (June 27).

The Chairman of Worcestershire County Council, Coun Ian Hopwood, also raised the flag outside County Hall, as well as local authorities, town and parish councils across the country to show their support.

Mr Knight said: “We are raising the flag over the Guildhall as a sign of thanks and respect, and to help boost morale for the troops and their families based in Worcester.”

Armed Forces Day will see local regiment the Queen’s Royal Hussars march through the city centre, exercising the right conferred on them last year when they were awarded the Freedom of the City, followed by an afternoon of family activities at Worcester Racecourse.

The parade is due to start at 11am with afternoon events at Pitchcroft running from 12.30pm to 4pm, where people of all ages will get the chance to see genuine military hardware and meet the soldiers face to face.
