Ex Hurricane Gonzalo set to hit Worcester overnight

Worcester Editorial 20th Oct, 2014 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A WEATHER warning has been issued with strong winds and heavy rain set to lash the county in the next 24 hours.

Forecasts by the Met Office predict from midnight tonight wind speeds will increase, peaking at 25mph.

It also predicts there will be gusts in the next 24 hours which will be close to 50mph.

For Worcester, rain is predicted almost constantly from 1am to 7am and again for several hours in the afternoon.

The conditions will be caused by the remains of Hurricane Gonzalo which has made its way across the Atlantic after slamming into Bermuda.

The Met Office has officially issued a yellow warning for Worcestershire.

On its website, a statement read: “The public should be aware of the potential for disruption to travel and possible damage to trees.

“Difficult driving conditions will result, perhaps exacerbated by surface water and spray in places.”

In anticipation, Worcestershire Highways have put in additional gulley emptying gangs and all tree contractors are on standby if needed. These will be ready to work throughout the night if required.

Coun John Smith, county council cabinet member for highways, said: “The information we have from the MET Office is that we’re due to experience some strong gusts overnight and into tomorrow morning. We’ve put plans in place and have additional teams ready to work if needed.

“In addition to the potential problems posed by the winds, there’s also a chance of some localised minor surface water flooding. It doesn’t look like things are going to be too nice at all. “As ever, people are being reminded to take care if they are out and about.”
