Enjoy the countryside with new walk

Worcester Editorial 18th Jul, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A NEW countryside walk which is accessible to all has been launched near Worcester.

The Millennium Way Easy Access Circular Walk was officially opened at a ribbon cutting event.

The route starts at the March Hare in Broughton Hackett and takes participants on a 3.5-mile circuit through White Ladies Aston.

The walk was put forward by a member of the Droitwich Spa 41 Club and then the organisation worked closely with Worcestershire County Council’s countryside service and the Solihull 41 branch to make the site accessible.

‘41 Club’ is the pet name for the Association of Ex-Round Tablers’ Clubs.

After consulting the Disabled Ramblers Association for guidance and advice, work was carried out to transform the site, including replacing stiles with gates, widening ditch crossings, way marking and clearing vegetation.

Barry Durman, the National 41 Club’s vice president, cut the opening ribbon on the walk, with 30 people walking the route and eight on their trampers (off-road mobility scooters).

Amanda Hill, countryside access volunteers officer, said the new walk offered both walkers and those using trampers the chance to enjoy the countryside.

“It is thanks to all the volunteers involved that the route was improved and the co-operation of landowners and tenants with the work required,” she added.

The walk now becomes one of 45 circular routes along the 100-mile linear Millennium Way set up by the 41 Club.

Walk Worcestershire is a series of short, easy-to-follow waymarked circulars, aimed at encouraging local people to use their network of public rights of way.
