Driving ban after crashing car through farmer’s fence

A MOTORIST who crashed his car through a farmer’s fence has been given a 12 month driving ban.

Thomas Griffiths, formerly of Park Lane in Hallow, pleaded guilty at Worcester Magistrates Court last Friday (February 20) to driving over the legal alcohol limit.

On February 1 the 21-year-old drove his Ford KA along the A443 and crashed through a hedge and into a field where he left his car, the court heard.

Police were called to the collision and knocked on the door of a nearby house where the residents were able to direct them to the address of Griffiths, where they later found him.

Griffiths told officers he knew the farmer and intended to sort the damage with him in the morning but gave a positive breath test of 59 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

Prosecution solicitor Adrian Jones said the defendant had gone out the night before with friends, drank five bottles of lager and some shots before going home.

Defence solicitor Nick Roberts said Griffiths parked up the KA with no intention of driving but got a call from his girlfriend later on to say she needed picking up.

He said: “This is a classic case of someone miscalculating the amount of alcohol they have drunk the night before.

“He got up at 5am to make journey thinking he was ok.”

Griffiths was also fined £240 and ordered to pay the victim surcharge of £24 and court costs of £85.

Head of the Bench Stuart Allerton said: “It takes a long time to get alcohol out of your system, we will offer you the course and you will learn more about how long it takes.”
