Dog owners urged to keep it clean

Worcester Editorial 21st Aug, 2016 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

DOG owners in Worcester are being urged to do their bit to keep the streets clean of their pets’ mess by using a special app.

Jointly developed by Worcester City Council, Safer Worcester Partnership and The Duckworth Worcestershire Trust, the popular PooWatch web app reports dog mess or finds the nearest bin to dispose of the waste.

Since the app was launched in November last year it has attracted more than 4,100 reports of dog mess and now has more than 150 regular users.

Volunteers support the PooWatch campaign with the use of chalk spray marking, counting, and distinctive stencilled messages in areas where dog mess problems have been reported.

Jude Allen, Worcester City Council Community Safety Co-ordinator, said: “The PooWatch app is a great tool for dog owners and other residents and the more people that use it, the fewer unsightly views and smells of dog litter there will be on our streets this summer.

“When we get a lot of reports for a particular part of the city we declare it a hot spot, and we then put out poo bag dispensers to make it easier for people to clear up after their dogs and to raise awareness.”

A Bark in the Park event will be held at Gheluvelt Park on September 10 to raise awareness of the PooWatch app and to get more of the public engaged with tackling the problem.
