Diglis playground revamp revealed

Worcester Editorial 22nd Jul, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A NEW £80,000 playground has been opened for school children to give it the run around.

Students from Cherry Orchard Primary School were the first to test the new playground equipment at Diglis Playing Fields on Thursday (July 16).

The improvements, which were paid for by private developers as a condition for planning permission for other projects, include a natural play mound with tunnel, wide slide, pull up rope, Burma bridge, roundabouts and a totem pole maze for younger children.

There is also hurricane and pendulum swings, a pick up sticks style climbing frame, buddy board, see saw and zig zag twister for the older children and a separate side of the playground.

A sitting area has been positioned between the two sections so parents and guardians can watch their youngsters easily in the shade.

Coun Andy Roberts, cabinet member for a clean, green and safe city, said: “It’s fantastic to see this new play area in action; it’s something which locally people very much wanted, and we’ve worked closely with the Friends of Diglis to deliver it.

“This is one of five play areas across the city which we’ve recently revamped – ensuring that Worcester children can enjoy many happy hours playing outdoors, both over the summer holidays and well in to the future.”

About £148,000 has been invested into play areas throughout the city. Lansdowne Road has been transformed with £30,000 of improvements, £16,000 was spent on Middleton Gardens, £12,000 on Field Walk and £10,000 on the Green Centre in Dines Green.

These upgrades include new climbing frames and nets, rope ladders, toddler swings, l;ow level hammocks, slides play houses, see saws and fireman’s poles.
