Cricketers win over young

THE ENGLAND woman’s cricket team visited Worcester ahead of their Ashes clash to gather support and inspire children to take up the sport.

The team travelled round the city’s primary schools on April 28 to promote the sport and encourage pupils who have never played cricket to pick up a bat and bowl a few overs.

Cricketers Tammy Beaumont, Kate Cross, Lydia Greenway and Jenny Gunn attended eight schools including St Barnabas, Perdiswell and Northwick Manor, working with cricket charity ‘Chance to Shine’, which aims to develop the grassroots of the sport throughout schools and communities.

Kate Cross, England women’s coaching ambassador said: “Supporting children to play sport is massively important, I didn’t get the chance to play cricket at school so to be a role model for these kids means a great deal to me.

“I’ve never been to New Road myself so I’m really looking forward to it as I’ve heard very good things about the ground. It’s going to be a special summer.”

Charlotte Edwards, England women’s captain, said: “I am really looking forward to visiting lots of Chance to Shine schools surrounding the Women’s Ashes venues this summer.

“We are aiming to win our third consecutive Ashes against Australia and we want all the support we can get.”

The Women’s Ashes Series match at New Road on July 26 will be the last of three Royal London One Day Internationals.
