Cram hopes for even bigger City Run

THE FORMER British athletics star behind last year’s inaugural Worcester City 10k has pledged to make 2015’s competition ‘bigger and better’.

Steve Cram, who notably won gold at the 1983 World Championships, was in the city last week to launch this year’s Worcester City Run, which takes place on Sunday, September 20.

Thousands of people lined the streets to see the event make its debut in 2014 while witnessing Paula Radcliffe take on the 10k course.

However, Mr Cram, whose company, Events of the North, organises the race, believes this year’s competition has the potential to be even bigger.

“We were delighted with how everything went last year,” he said.

“Working closely with Worcester City Council, we staged three races that were a pleasure to be involved in as either participant or supporter.Worcester offers a stunning backdrop and the enthusiasm generated on the day by everyone was great to see.

“After such a positive experience in 2014, we are very excited about the potential to grow the events this year, and make them even better.

“I am sure that runners and cyclists of all ages and abilities will be signing up very soon and look forward to cheering them along the route.”

Mrs Radcliffe may have been the star attraction as she made her first competitive appearance in more than two years. But it was promising Worcester runner Jenny Nesbitt who stole the show as she beat the marathon world record holder and she said she was looking forward to defending her title.

“I have competed in many road races, but the Worcester City 10k has immediately become one of my favourites,” she said.

“Of course, the result helped, but everything about the event was fantastic.

“I can’t wait to come back this year and try to defend my title, as I never in a million years imagined being in this position. Starting alongside my long time idol, Paula Radcliffe and finishing in front of her was an experience I will never forget.”

Miss Nesbitt also urged the people of Worcester to get involved in the competition, which includes other events Run-Bike-Run and Young Athletes Run.

“I’d really encourage any experienced or aspiring athlete to enter one of the Worcester City Run events,” she said.

“There’s going to be a great atmosphere on the day again and I hope that we see even more competitors and spectators there this year.”

Coun Alan Amos, Mayor of Worcester, added: “I am sure that this year’s event will be even bigger and better – the course, which takes in the riverside, racecourse and Cathedral, really shows off Worcester at its best.”
