AN ELDERLY couple and their two dogs have been rescued from their narrowboat after it got stuck on a submerged sand embankment.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) were called shortly after 6pm last Saturday (June 6) and found the 45ft narrowboat in distress on the River Severn on the north end of Bevere Island about 300 yards from the weir and lock.

Swiftwater Rescue Technician (SRT) crews with boats from Worcester and Droitwich also attended the scene and they then transported the pair and their pets to safety.

The crew then attempted to free the narrowboat but it caused a hazard to other river traffic.

Water was drained from the boats water tanks to help lift the vessel and SRT crews wearing dry suits were able to push the boat off the sandbank with another firefighter starting its engine and putting it into reverse.

Station Commander Ian Jallands from HWFRS said: “The rescue boat crew quickly removed the elderly couple and their dogs from danger, before dealing with the stranded narrow boat.

“At this particular incident, due to the proximity of the lock and weir, an attempt was made to re-float the boat.

“The crews’ skillful efforts were quickly rewarded and the narrow boat was driven upstream to a nearby mooring. The couple and their dogs were soon reunited with their boat to enjoy the rest of their holiday,” he added.
