Colleges team up to help students shine

A TEAM of bright students in Worcester helped bring light back into the classrooms of a city college which caters for blind and partially sighted children.

Teenagers, studying Level Two and Level Three Engineering at Heart of Worcestershire College were tasked to design and manufacture ten light probes for New College Worcester.

They work by emitting a beeping sound which changes pitch according to the brightness of the light entering the probe.

The college uses the light probes for a wide variety of applications in science including measuring the depth of liquids, investigating the properties of light and also for observing chemical reactions.

However, Will Stark, head of science at the college, said they were no longer in production which led him to contact students at HOW College.

“The light probes will be an invaluable resource for New College Worcester, allowing our students to carry out a wide range of practical activities in science lessons,” he said.

“We are enormously grateful for the time and resources given up by the Engineering department at Heart of Worcestershire College and of course to the students who have made this all possible.”
