City turns out show support for regiment

THOUSANDS of visitors packed into Worcester to show their appreciation to members of the Queen’s Royal Hussars on their march through the city.

A total of 220 soldiers from the regiment had their swords drawn, bayonets fixed, beating drums and flying guidons during Saturday’s (June 27) parade.

The Queen’s Royal Hussars was formed in Fallingbostel, Germany on September 1, 1993.

Since then, the regiment has established an allegiance to Worcester and Worcestershire and the event saw it exercising the right bestowed on them last October when they were awarded the freedom of the city.

Accompanied by the Royal Engineers Band from Nottinghamshire, around 100 veterans from across the Midlands and 50 local Queen’s Royal Hussars cadets, the parade saw the regiment hit the streets to a warm Worcester welcome.

After starting in Quay Street, the parade continued to Broad Street, turning right at the High Street, past The Guildhall where a salute was taken by Lt Gen Tom Beckett CBE, Colonel of the Regiment, the Lord Lieutenant of Worcester, Lt Colonel Patrick Holcroft and the Mayor of Worcester, Coun Roger Knight.

After that, the procession turned into Pump Street, onto The Shambles, St Swithin’s Street and then down Broad Street before concluding in Quay Street.

Following the parade, there was an afternoon of activities at Pitchcroft which included displays of military equipment and vehicles.

Among them was a Challenger 2 Tank and DH3 spy plane while visitors were also able to have a go on an army wall-climbing and view vintage weaponry from historic battles.
