A DISQUALIFIED driver has been sent to prison and banned for more than three years after being caught behind the wheel of a friend’s car while over the legal limit.
Patryck Mortimer, of Vincent Road, was sentenced to 20 weeks in custody, with four weeks to run concurrently, after he pleaded guilty to disqualified driving, drink driving and driving with no insurance.
On March 22, about 11.40pm, officers on patrol saw the 35-year-old drive a red Ford Mondeo out onto Derby Road, where he mounted a curb and almost hit a wall.
Mortimer drove to a dead end and was stopped by police, who went over to the car and could smell alcohol, Worcester Magistrates Court heard on Friday (April 11).
The court also heard how officers ran checks and found out the defendant was banned from driving for 20 months in December last year for drink driving.
Mortimer had been at an address in Wylds Lane and had asked his friend if he could take the vehicle, which had been recently bought, for ‘a little drive’.
It is estimated he drove about 800 metres.
Sam Lamsdale, defending solicitor, said: “A few people had gone to the address and had drunk a few cans of beer and he fully accepts he was over the legal limit, although he did not think about it at the time.
“It was a big vehicle down narrow lanes and although he accepts he mounted the curb he says it was at slow speeds as you couldn’t get round the corner otherwise.”
Mortimer blew 64 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath and was also given a 40-month ban from driving.
