Baby fighting for life after M5 horror crash

Worcester Editorial 24th Jun, 2015 Updated: 19th Oct, 2016   0

A BABY is fighting for his life after a crash on the M5.

The three-month-old boy was one of four people hurt in the incident at 1.20am on Saturday (June 20) on the northbound carriageway, between Junction 7 (Evesham) and Junction 6 (Worcester).

It involved four vehicles – a silver Volkswagen Golf and a blue Fiat, which were both driven by men in their 20s, and two lorries. One of those was driven by a man in his 50s and the other by a man in his 60s.

After being given emergency treatment at the scene, the three-month-old was taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A two-year-old suffered serious injuries and was trapped in the same car. Firefighters using ultra-heavy rescue equipment managed to free her after 50 minutes and she was then given emergency treatment and also taken to Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The driver of the Fiat suffered minor injuries and a woman passenger received serious pelvic injuries.

They were both taken to the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The two lorry drivers were checked over by ambulance crews but did not require further treatment. They were discharged at the scene.

Police have launched an appeal for witnesses in a bid to establish exactly what happened and what led to the crash.

Officers from Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG), the fire service and West Midlands Ambulance Service attended and the motorway was closed for several hours while a full investigation was carried out at the scene.

Sgt Gavin Green from the Central Motorway Police Group said “This is a terrible incident impacting on a young family.

“We are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the lead up to it.”

He added the family was being supported by a specialist police officer and thanked the public for their patience whilst the motorway was closed.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and dangerous driving.

He has been bailed until August 21 when he will attend Worcester Police Station.

Anyone with any information which may help the investigation should call CMPG on 101.
