100mph M5 motorist banned

A MOTORIST caught travelling at an average of 100 miles per hour on the M5 near Worcester has been banned from driving for six months.

Parmajit Atwal, of Springvale Avenue, Walsall, was also found with a spring loaded extendible baton when he was stopped by police in his Vauxhall Insignia near Junction 7, on March 23.

An unmarked police vehicle followed the 31-year-old for more than half a mile and clocked the speed with a detection device, Worcester Magistrates Court heard on Friday (April 11).

When officers stopped Atwal, who already had nine points on his driving licence, they smelt cannabis which prompted them to search his car and find the weapon.

The court heard how the defendant kept the baton in the drivers door after he was seriously assaulted while driving to work in Smethwick last year.

Atwal was given a further six points on his licence for the speeding offence, meaning he received an automatic ban of six months, and was ordered to pay £474 in fines, court costs and a victim surcharge.

Paul Selby, defending solicitor, said: “There’s no suggestion the weapon was used in any way to cause fear or to threaten anybody at all.

“He simply bought it for self-defence not knowing it was an offensive weapon.”

Chair of the Bench Judy Hulland added: “You were carrying this baton clearly with the intention if you needed to, you would use it. If you did that you would find yourself in even more trouble.”

Atwal was fined £133 for speeding, £233 for carrying an offensive weapon, ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £23. The court also ordered for forfeiture and destruction of the baton.
